CVS’ extra mural studies (EMS) support provides an opportunity for students to gain real life work experience in a veterinary practice, with no ‘formal’ training required.
Over 1,000 students in year’s three to five of their course from all UK vet schools are currently enrolled within our Companion Animal, Farm and Equine practices.
We have created an EMS support framework - based on RCVS day one competencies - so practices and students can carefully structure each placement, to make the most of their EMS experience. This framework puts health, wellbeing and professional skills on a par with clinical skills to encourage students to take a holistic approach to their development - helping them to grow into happy, competent and confident veterinary surgeons. We also offer students access to select courses from our extensive Knowledge Hub online library, to further support their growth and development.
A placement supervisor is appointed to be the main contact for each EMS student during their placement. They help students set goals, create timetables and conduct reviews of each placement - reflecting on what they have achieved and setting new goals for future placements.
In addition, we have introduced a series of voluntary awards that students can work towards as they progress through their EMS programme, to recognise their hard work and achievement.
Instead of having to spend time contacting individual surgeries and to help students find placements at any of our practices at the touch of a button, we have developed an EMS online booking system. Every CVS practice offering EMS has its own page containing information about the practice, along with a list of available placements. To book a EMS placement, visit Knowledge Hub to register.
Intra-mural rotations (IMR) is key to the veterinary degree, where specific clinical skills are taught in a practical setting.
CVS has close connections with veterinary schools throughout the UK. We provide rotations for the Universities of Surrey, Nottingham and Bristol – covering farm, equine and small animal general practice.
Two thirds of all students pass through a CVS practice, and we are the top scoring placement experience as voted by veterinary students.
Many of our experienced veterinary colleagues have a joint role, with part of their working hours spent in honorary and secondment teaching at UK veterinary institutions.
