Small Animal Internal Medicine Resident – Bristol Vet Specialists, UK
Bristol Vet Specialists is opening an ECVIM-CA accredited residency position in Internal Medicine to start in July 2026.
The Internal Medicine Department comprises six senior clinicians. The senior referral team also includes one ECC specialist, three medical oncologists and a radio-oncologist working remotely, two cardiologists, five surgeons (orthopaedic and soft tissue), five anaesthetists, five radiologists, four neurologists, three dermatologists, three ophthalmologists and a dentistry specialist. We have residents in medicine, surgery, oncology, neurology, anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging, cardiology, dermatology, cardiology, ophthalmology. We also have rotating and discipline-specific interns, and an excellent referral nursing team. All disciplines are specialist led.
Our 2700m2 new hospital is very well equipped with on-site facilities including MRI scanner, CT scanner, abdominal and cardiac ultrasound scanners, digital radiography, C-arm fluoroscopy, dedicated endoscopy suite (gastroscope, colonoscope, video-bronchoscopes, flexible cystoscope as well as rigid scopes), EMG, cystomanometry & urethral profilometry. We also have an Elekta 6MV linear accelerator capable of state-of-the-art image-guided radiotherapy treatments.
This 3-year residency program includes 65-70% time on-clinics having primary responsibility on clinical cases, the remainder being divided between externships, research and paper writing. Participation to the emergency service will be done on a shared rota basis (no more than 1-in-4 weeknights and 1-in-4 weekends on call, averaging over twelve months). The successful candidate will also be expected to present research work at Scientific Congresses and be involved in CPD events for first opinion vets. An experienced veterinary epidemiologist within the company will provide support as required for statistics and research. Particular attention will be paid on meeting credentials criteria to sit the ECVIM-CA certifying examination at the end of the residency program.
We are looking for a candidate who can demonstrate a strong interest in Small Animal Internal Medicine and experience in Referral-level Hospitals with high skills in communication to clients and colleagues, and in managing complex cases and a busy caseload. Applicants must be at least 2 years graduated and should have completed a 12-month Small Animal Rotating Internship as described in the ECVIM-CA brochure. Significant time spent in a first opinion setting is highly desirable. Experience in performing and presenting research would be a bonus. The candidate should be proficient speaking and writing in the English language and should ensure that they are able to work in the United Kingdom before applying.
