Experienced OOH Veterinary Surgeon – Sole Charge

Rota pattern: Ideally 7 on 14 off, open to discussing options however to support your needed
Salary: £70,000 full time equivalent

Ready to take the clinical lead when every decision counts?

We are looking for a highly experienced small animal vet who thrives in emergency and critical care and is fully confident working sole charge. You will take ownership of a varied caseload—from rapid triage and stabilisation through diagnostics, complex medical management and emergency surgery—making decisive clinical judgements when every minute matters.

This is an opportunity to use your experience with genuine clinical autonomy, supported by an accomplished nursing team and a well-equipped hospital. Our 7-nights-on, 14-nights-off rota gives you extended time to rest, reset and enjoy life outside work while continuing to practice emergency and critical care at a high level.

Life at CVS 24/7 Wokingham

MiNightVet Wokingham is a dedicated small animal emergency service with a passionate team of vets, nurses, PCAs and reception colleagues. You will have advanced diagnostic and surgical equipment at your fingertips, including a permanent CT unit installed in 2024, digital X-ray, ultrasound, an onsite laboratory, monitored hospitalisation, isolation facilities and two sterile operating theatres—everything you need to investigate quickly and intervene decisively.

Our friendly, collaborative team is committed to outstanding patient care and will help you make the most of the hospital's capabilities. As a nurse training practice, we also benefit from a motivated nursing team that understands the pace, precision and teamwork required overnight.

About you

This is a senior clinical role. You will already have substantial small animal experience and the confidence to lead the overnight service without supervision. Your skill, your dedication and empathy will shape client perception of all CVS.  We need a vet who can remain calm under pressure, prioritise competing emergencies and move confidently from initial assessment to complex surgical intervention.

  • Proven sole-charge confidence: you can prioritise a changing emergency caseload, make sound decisions independently and take clear clinical ownership throughout the night.
  • Comprehensive emergency surgical confidence: you can independently perform a broad range of urgent soft-tissue procedures, including exploratory laparotomy, enterotomy or enterectomy for gastrointestinal foreign bodies, GDV stabilisation and surgery, caesarean section, and management of traumatic wounds and haemorrhage.
  • Advanced ECC capability: you are assured in triage, stabilisation and ongoing management of seriously unwell patients, can interpret diagnostic findings promptly and adapt treatment plans as cases evolve.
  • Calm clinical leadership: you communicate clearly, direct the overnight team effectively and maintain high standards during demanding or rapidly changing situations.
  • Compassionate client communication: you can explain options, risk and prognosis sensitively and clearly, helping owners make informed decisions in stressful circumstances.
  • Professionally assured: you hold current RCVS registration, bring substantial small animal practice experience and recognise when specialist input or referral is in the patient's best interests
