Emily wanted to be a vet when her family moved to a farm in Devon aged 11 and a local mixed practice vet came to treat a horse. Emily remembers being in awe and decided in that moment being a vet would be her vocation. She then spent her holidays at the local vets – seeing everything from sick ducklings to cow calvings.
Emily’s career started at the The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) on a small animal rotating internship. She’s been a SA vet since. She loves that the veterinary profession is so varied and that she gets to do such great things for her patients and clients.
Embarking on general practice, Emily did various locum stints where she witnessed how different practices worked and gained experience from many colleagues. Emily also started a certificate in veterinary business management to get an insight into this aspect of the profession, achieving a post graduate diploma in Veterinary Professional Studies.
Emily joined CVS as a locum in Exmouth before becoming a permanent employee, gaining a SA Medicine Certificate and becoming an Advanced Practitioner. She then became Head Vet at White Lodge Vet Clinic - Companion Animal where she focussed on QI, first opinion audits, research and clinical excellence, also achieving a RCVS Knowledge Award for Antimicrobial Stewardship 2023.
Her inspiration to become a RD came from realising the role could be far-reaching and have a positive impact over a wide range of practices. To be in a position to apply, her then RD helped mentor her. When the opportunity arose Emily applied for the North Devon and Cornwall RD position.
Emily has always enjoyed leading a team. She loves working with her teams to troubleshoot, find improvement areas and work together to improve the client journey. She believes getting the client, people and clinical right, means the success of a practice will follow. A mum of three, Emily also feels CVS has been very supportive of her career development.
